One of the most prestigious and comprehensive 200 hour yoga teacher training programs in the United States. The diverse faculty, all experts in their fields, includes the director of the program, renowned teacher and author, Beryl Bender Birch, and Sheila Magalhaes, director of Heartsong Yoga in East Longmeadow, MA. The training begins the weekend of September 16, 2016 and runs 8 weekends (one per month) through May, 2017. This is one of several opportunities offered by The Hard & The Soft Yoga Institute for yoga practitioners to study with top teachers throughout locations in the northeast (courses also offered in Elliot, Maine, Setauket, Long Island, and Great Barrington, MA) and earn their 200 hour certification for teaching. The program is based on an exceptional curriculum comprised not only of top quality training in the practice and teaching of asana, but also of deep examination of yoga philosophy, lifestyle, history, and the other 7 limbs of classical yoga
Birch has been teaching yoga for over 40 years, throughout the US and Europe, including retreats and workshops at renowned yoga centers such as the Kripalu Center in Stockbridge MA and Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY (where she has been on faculty since l984.) Beryl is the author of 4 books on yoga, which have collectively sold nearly 500,000 copies. She is the originator of “Power Yoga,” a modified version of astanga developed for tight athletes, and detailed in her firstbook, Power Yoga. She pioneered the introduction of yoga into the athletic community in the early 80’s and was one of the first American “yogis” to travel to India in l974. She spent 6 months with her teacher, Jain monk, Munishree Chitrabhanu, and traveled all over north India, including Bombay, Rishikesh, Hardwar, Manali, Chandigarh, Srinagar and Kashmir
Sheila is the director and owner of the song Yoga Center and has been teaching and practicing yoga for over 25 years. She is a long time astanga practitioner and student of Beryl’s, as well as a certified Kripalu teacher. She has been a leader in her community since opening her studio 23 years ago, and has offered yoga and meditation classes at a variety of venues throughout her community.
This program is a serious, in depth study of classical yoga, all eight limbs. There is an application and interview process. Please research all programs in your area. If you are looking to simply gain information about asana and be able to run an “exercise sequence” of postures, this is probably not the program for you. If you seriously want to investigate the history, philosophy, psychology, transformative powers, and applicability of yoga therapy to today’s crazy lifestyles, than this is worth investigating.
