200 & 500 Hour Teacher Training Certification Programs

General Information

The Hard & The Soft Yoga Institute is a Registered Yoga School with Yoga Alliance and offers training for both 200 and 500 Hour Yoga Teacher Certification programs.  The curriculum for each of our courses is among some of the most comprehensive and highly respected in the country, and makes these programs an excellent choice for those either just starting out or looking to dive into the deeper dimensions of yoga, or for those teachers who wish to take their teaching to the next level and become 500 hour Certified and Registered Yoga Teachers.

Our 200 and 300 hour training courses run one weekend per month for eight and ten months respectively, and are offered at a number of our affiliate schools in CT, MA, NY, ME, SC, and (coming soon) CA and CO.   The 300 hour is for those students and teachers who have already completed a 200 Hour training from any school registered with Yoga Alliance, including ours.  Since we accept 200 hour transfer credits, we then offer a 500 hour level yoga teacher certification.

Whether your intention is simply to expand your yoga practice and bring a more mindful sense of wellness into your life, or to step on to the path of becoming a yoga teacher – our 200 hour training is for you. If you are already a 200 hour certified teacher, and wish to take your teaching to the next level & prepare for a career in yoga service and a leadership role in your community, then our outstanding 500 hour course curriculum gives you an opportunity to dive progressively into the deeper and powerfully therapeutic dimensions of the vast array of yoga practices.

Both programs offer an extraordinary opportunity to surround yourself with like-minded individuals and to immerse yourself in the yoga lifestyle.  Whether it is your dream to teach or to simply to deepen your practice and study of yoga, our programs will provide you with the skill, knowledge and confidence to move out into the world as a community leader and teacher of this brilliant methodology.

Our director, Beryl, is a renowned and respected yoga practitioner and teacher and is the author of four books on yoga, including the best selling, Power Yoga, and her most recent book, Yoga for Warriors.  She has been teaching yoga and meditation for 40 years. She is also the Board Chair and Co-Founder of the Give Back Yoga Foundation which supports yoga teachers in developing service projects in under-served areas of their communities.  100% of all profits from these programs goes to support the Give Back Yoga Foundation and, through scholarships and work study programs, the continued growth and dissemination of these teacher training programs.

Our programs offer a unique opportunity to study with, not only Beryl, but with a variety of our senior faculty members, all of whom are outstanding 500 or 1000-hour graduates of The Hard & The Soft Yoga Institute. Many of our staff teachers have been teaching and practicing yoga for over 20 years and all have a strong foundation in the study of non-dual classical yoga (with Beryl) and are renowned in their respective fields. As all of us here at The Hard & The Soft, they continue to grow and study individually and bring to every session, a wide diversity of specialized knowledge and skills.

The First Level – 200 hour Advanced Yoga Training Certification Program

Our 200-hour (8 month) course of yoga study gives you an opportunity to dive progressively into the deeper and powerfully therapeutic dimensions of the yoga practices. For those who wish to become certified as teachers, our program will teach you the foundations of classical yoga and give you the range of tools you need to not only teach a safe and effective asana class and but offer beginning meditation and pranayama techniques for stress and anxiety relief, and to work with special populations as well.

If it is your dream to teach, share with us that dream.  Whether you hope to teach in schools or studios, whether to athletes or seniors, to those with disabilities or at risk youth, or in all corners of your community, we will help you devise an Individualized Yoga Program (IYP) that focuses on the area in your community or the special population with whom you hope to work.   Working with your IYP also prepares you to continue your studies in our 500 hour teacher training certification program or in any of the specialized yoga service programs of the Give Back Yoga Foundation, such as Mindful Yoga Therapy for Veterans, The Prison Yoga Project, Yoga for 12 Step Recovery, Yoga for Cancer, and others.

The focus of this unique training is an aspect of the 8-limbed path, called kriya yoga, or the yoga of action, “Do the Work”.   This means your practice is part of your lifestyle and strengthens and supports your intention to participate in the healing of our world.   We are proud of our graduates. They do not sequester themselves in monasteries or drop out of global responsibility.  Some are yoga teachers and some are not.  But they are all leaders in their communities and find the courage to speak out and speak up, to stand up for those how have no voice, to call out injustice, to work for clean food, and drinkable water, to protect Mother Earth and our environment, and, through the discipline of yoga practice, to eradicate anger, greed, hate, and jealousy, not from the world, but from themselves.

The Next Level – 500 hour Advanced Yoga Teacher Training Certification

Our 500-hour Yoga Teacher Certification course (300 hours of training) from The Hard & The Soft Yoga Institute and Give Back Yoga Foundation provides you with an opportunity to dive progressively into the deeper and powerfully therapeutic dimensions of the yoga practices, and prepares you for a career in yoga service and a leadership role in your community.

If your dream is to share with others the ongoing benefits that you derive from your own practice of asana and mindfulness, then this outstanding course curriculum will help you to:

  • Find the confidence and training you need to broaden your vision,
  • Establish a range of tools to take you beyond vinyasa,
  • Reach special populations and a wider variety of students and expand your class offerings
  • Establish a career in yoga service,
  • Realize that being able to make a difference in people’s lives is empowering and enlivening, and makes your own life feel more satisfying and worthwhile, and finally,
  • Find joy in the continued discovery that the true source of happiness lies in service to the world.

While many yoga instructors teach asana, very few are teaching a comprehensive vision of the complete eight-limbed path of classical (raja) yoga. Many of your students are longing to go beyond asana and go deeper into the internal world of meditation and pranayama.  You have the capacity to provide the spiritual guidance for a global shift in consciousness. You can change the world and help others develop kindness, compassion, and joyfulness, the encoded teachings of the Yoga Sutra.

Whether it is your dream to teach athletes, seniors, those with disabilities, at risk youth, or to teach in all corners of your community – tell us your dream. We will help you devise an Individualized Yoga Program (IYP) that focuses on the area in your community or the special population, with whom you hope to work. Working with your IYP also prepares you to continue your studies in any of the specialized yoga service programs of the Give Back Yoga Foundation, such Mindful Yoga Therapy for Veterans, The Prison Yoga Project, Yoga for 12 Step Recovery, Yoga for Cancer, and others.
