Return to Oaxaca: The Magical and Cultural Heart of Mexico
Yoga Retreat and Adventure: With Beryl Bender Birch
October 25-November 1, 2014
—–Practice, Leadership, and Activism—–
Support ecologically sustainable tourism and traditional culture in rural Oaxaca!
Our presence and interest in this culturally rich city and these pastoral mountain villages helps to preserve a sustainable economy in an ecologically conscious region of Oaxaca.
Two of our most amazing yoga adventures ever were to Oaxaca, the mile high valley and cultural center of Mexico and to several of the neighboring indigenous villages.- so we are finally returning! Our guide and host, once again, is author, Mary Jane Gagnier, Oaxacan local for 27 years and renowned authority on Mexican folk art, history, and indigenous flora and culture.
Itinerary:
We begin our trip at Casa Murguia (www.casamurguia.com), Mary Jane’s beautiful home centrally located in old town Oaxaca, which will be our home base for the first couple days. We will visit the pre-Hispanic site of Yagul, hike to the mesa at the top for pranayama and walking meditation, join the vast Sunday market in Tlacolula, (largest outdoor market in Mexico), and enjoy a yummy picnic to start our Sunday! Then possibilities for the coming days ——–
• Enjoy asana, meditation, and ceremony every morning next to the pool, amidst the bougainvillea, ginger, and Birds of Paradise.
• Travel to Teotitlan del Valle, the Zapotec weaver’s village world famous for it rugs and textiles.
• Visit the 16th century cathedral in the center of Oaxaca, the Church of Santo Domingo
• Join in the high holy, high energy pre-week Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festivities
• Cooking classes, shopping in Oaxaca, guided walking tour, café con leche on the zocalo, and art galleries and museums on every corner.
• Trip out to Matatlan and gaze upon the vast agave fields. Learn the old world mescal making methods, (still practiced today) of grinding and fermenting the agave into world famous mescal and be a guest in the only authentic/certified mescal making village in Mexico
Then Tuesday or Wednesday we travel to the spectacularly beautiful mountain village of Amatlan, (http://sierranorte.org.mx/amatlan_caracteristicas.html ) (7200’). Settle into our cabins, relax, and wander through the little village before our dinner (all specially prepared with care for us) in the neighboring village of Lachatao.
Followed by more possibilities ——–
• Morning practice in a beautiful Adobe gathering lodge just outside our cabins
• Cool road trip to Ixtlan for markets and shopping and to Tavegua, a native pottery village, friendly folks and friends or stay home and enjoy a day of reading and quiet meditation in your hammock.
• More preparation festivities for Dia de los Muertos
• Hike the Route of the Hacienda’s – 2-3 hour mostly flat moderate hike – and visit the enchanting ruins of the old silver mining haciendas.
• Fire Ceremony in the tradition of the local culture
• Free time for reading, hiking, and contemplation
All Meals: wonderfully exquisite, local, organic, traditional Oaxacan cuisine – menu designed by Mary Jane and prepared in house by our resident Oaxacan chef and her staff – chef travels with us to Amatlan.
Cost: $1950 per person based on double occupancy – limited availability for single occupancy ($300 surcharge). Price includes all meals, 7 nights lodging, and arrival/departure transfers from Oaxaca.
Limited to 10 participants – plus Beryl, and her assistant for this trip, renowned Texas artist Georgi Cummingham –
